In the original story (unlike the 1967 Disney adaptation), it is REALLY Bagheera who protects and loves Mowgli, while Baloo is the teacher with the iron hat.

The same is true of a 1989 anime adaptation that I think most closely follows the original book so far: shonen Mowgli.

Excerpt from the book (I wrote it out)

- In vain, the man cub - man cub. He must learn all law.

- 'But think how small he is,' said the Black Panther, who would have spoiled Mowgli completely if he had stood on him.

- Is there a little creature in the wild that cannot be killed? Is there not? Well...

that's why I teach him these things, and why I beat him, very gently of course, if he forgets.

- Gently?! "You know how to be gentle, you old iron-legged thing!" growled Bagira.

You've beaten him up again today, from gentleness!

- Now I'm teaching him the Master Words of the Wild, which will keep you safe from birds and snakes and every beast that hunts on all fours, except his own troop. If he remember these words, he can ask protection from everyone in the Jungle.

Isn't that worth a beating?

- Now, just be careful not to kill the man cub. It's not a log to sharpen your blunt nails on. But what are the Master Words? I'd rather give than ask for help," Bagira held out a paw, admiring the steel-blue iron claws at the end of it, "but I'd like to know.

"I'd rather give than ask for help,"

that's the point!
